The workshop includes daily field trips, an introduction to the use of microscopes, identification keys, and a useful booklet. It is in part associated with the Mersey Tobeatic Research Institute.

Some topics to be covered:
Day 1 - What is a "moss"? Introduction to mosses and their allies. Introduction to the microscope using Polytrichum (hair cap moss) as an example. Introduction to using identification keys. How to make a packet for your specimens.

Day 2 - Habitats and substrata where mosses are found.

Day 3 - The role of mosses in the ecosystem. Surveying and identifying mosses in quadrats.
One of the goals of the workshop is to have each participant put together a useful reference collection of common mosses found in Nova Scotia.
